Roofing & Steel(Pty) Ltd traces its history back to 1983. Roofing and Steel Service Centre (Pty) Ltd commenced in 1983 when John Thoresen and Eddie Windsor decided with the small capital available to them to go into business for themselves. With only a guilotine and hand operated box and pan folder they rented a 200 m2 property in 10th Avenue Retreat CT. John negotiated terms with Robor to stock steel roofing sheets on consignment, whilst both Eddie and John managed to convince their combined friends and aquintances from their previous business dealings to support their young enterprise. As the business grew, John and Eddie were joined by John's wife Lorraine who took control of the finances, Eddie's wife, Lorraine's sister, Merle joined the firm about 12 months later.
Roofing and Steel Service Centre increased it's profile and product range as the business grew. From a Roofing supplier, the addition of more machinery elevated the firm to a light sheet metal work shop. Within a few years the business outgrew the 10th Avenue premises and relocated in Walnut Road Wetton. In February 2008 Roofing and Steel once again relocated to its current premises at 23 Polaris Road Lansdowne.
Roofing and Steel Service Centre went on to further increase product range to include roofing accessories to add value to their existing lines. More machines were purchased which gave entre' into the fishing and beverage industry. John left the business to begin a different type of business on his own, and still supports his old firm when need arises. The engineering side of the business became too demanding for Eddie to manage on his own , so he called in the help of Brian Barkley who had spent more than 25 years with Dorbyl Automotive Engineering specialising in Press Work, a talent that was to benefit Roofing and Steel well into the future. Brian's inovative nature guaranteed that there was no stopping the company's progression into mass production engineering, which has complimented the always busy sheet metal division.
Eddie and Garry Kinnes had known each other since the early nineties, Eddie had over the years, persistently harrassed Garry, who worked as one of Robor's representatives, to consider joining the firm when the opportunity presented itself. The opportunity presented itself when Robor closed down in Cape Town. So the steel merchant division of Roofing and Steel Service Centre was expanded. Under the watchful eye of Garry Kinnes the steel division has grown to such an extent that that Garry took on board Gary Koen as internal sales manager. An on site tool making facility under the leadership of expert tool maker Travis Gordon completes the manufacturing circle. Customers have it all under one roof. From design to finished product.
